About The Position

The Penn State Forestland Management Office (FLMO) is offering a paid ($17/hour) internship for a currently enrolled Penn State student interested in a career path in the forestry disciplines with an emphasis on geographic information systems. This is a part-time job working 40 hour/week for 13 weeks from May 11 – August 14, 2026. Start and end dates are negotiable. The primary focus of the internship will be locating and consolidating the FLMO GIS data compiled and created over the past thirty years. Additionally, the intern will learn silvicultural and sustainable forest management practices in a university research forest setting, working side by side with professional foresters to manage day-to-day operations throughout the growing season. Highlights will include designing and implementing silvicultural treatments, creation and manipulation of GIS & GPS data, invasive vegetation control projects, and skills training in the use of forestry tools and equipment. The internship also includes an educational component featuring learning sessions and off-site field trips. Driving a motor vehicle in remote areas on narrow unpaved roads is a requirement for the internship. Applicants must be enrolled in either a Penn State or Penn State-affiliated undergraduate program and scheduled to be enrolled in Penn State courses during the 2026 fall semester. Academic coursework in forestry, wildlife/fisheries, agriculture, plant science, GIS or related fields is an asset. Preference will be given to a forestry major candidate who is enrolled in an academic program minor focusing on geographic information systems and/or remote sensing.
