The College of Agricultural Sciences Department of Food Science is seeking to hire students for various research-related duties. The position involves conducting organized research in the area of food chemistry and food microbiology, performing independent literature searches, preparing summaries of research topics, and assisting the Principal Investigator (PI) with grant preparation. The role also includes supervising undergraduate and graduate student researchers, maintaining laboratory inventory, and ensuring proper documentation of research protocols.

  • Conduct organized research in the area of food chemistry/food microbiology
  • Perform independent literature searches and prepare summaries of topics pertinent to ongoing and future research
  • Prepare summaries of research projects conducted in the laboratory
  • Conduct research under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) leading to peer-reviewed publication
  • Assist PI with grant preparation
  • Perform analytical procedures and protocols as directed
  • Collect and analyze data from ongoing research projects
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate student researchers in the lab
  • Train new students in administrative procedures used in the laboratory
  • Maintain inventory and order research supplies and materials as needed
  • Assure that purchasing card transactions are reconciled in a timely manner
  • Maintain files (electronic) of protocols
  • Assure students provide appropriately formatted and referenced protocols as they are developed for the laboratory
  • Current Penn State student
  • Ability to conduct organized research
  • Experience with literature searches and summarization
  • Familiarity with research protocols and analytical procedures
  • Valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check
