About The Position

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University seeks an instructor to teach VIS 306: Image Post-Production on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am-10:50am during the Spring 2026 semester (3 credits). The course serves students across the Commercial & Advertising Photography and Editorial Photography & Photojournalism tracks. Course Description: This course explores the essential techniques and technologies that transform captured images into polished visual stories. Students learn industry-standard post-production software and workflows, focusing on organization, color theory, digital darkroom practices, metadata management, captioning, and photo compositing. Hands-on instruction prepares students to work efficiently from camera to cloud, incorporating camera-to-cloud workflows, remote collaboration, and advanced image manipulation techniques-including ethical applications of AI. The course also examines professional output preparation, storage and archiving strategies, printing considerations, and certification processes. By the end of the semester, students will understand how creativity and technology converge to produce high-quality visual work suitable for professional environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Professional experience in photography, digital imaging, or post-production.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Photo Mechanic, and digital workflow management.
  • Familiarity with AI-driven image tools and ethical considerations in image manipulation.
  • Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
  • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
  • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.
  • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and/or updating a detailed course syllabus and assignment sheets.
  • Ordering required textbooks, software access, and materials before the semester begins.
  • Preparing and delivering lectures, demonstrations, labs, and critiques.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Presenting instruction aligned with course competencies and learning outcomes.
  • Evaluating assignments, projects, and digital workflows in a timely manner.
  • Submitting mid-semester progress reports and final grades per University policies.
  • Encouraging professional standards in metadata, workflow, and ethical image practices.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned student evaluations.
