About The Position

The Part-Time Assistant Cheer Coach at Tyler Junior College is a 10-month position responsible for supporting the Head Coach in promoting school spirit through the cheerleading squad. This role involves engaging with students, athletes, and the community to enhance the game day experience and foster a positive environment at college events. The position requires evening and weekend hours to accommodate practices, games, and community appearances.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in a related field.
  • Two or more years of proven work experience with a cheer/dance team.
  • USA Cheer safety certificate required or willingness to obtain immediately.
  • Local residency to participate in community and college activities.
  • Exhibit organizational and planning skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in higher education, particularly in cheerleading and/or Student Life.
  • Certification through National Cheerleader Association as a cheerleading sponsor or coach.
  • Ability to demonstrate, teach, and critique technical skills associated with co-ed collegiate cheer teams.
  • Awareness of student development and learning, along with current trends in cheerleading.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in college activities for student recruitment, retention, and completion.
  • Prepare, organize, and attend practices, games, performances, appearances, competitions, and off-season training.
  • Provide general event and game day support, enhancing the game day experience.
  • Oversee the Mascot and manage appearance requests, including marketing efforts on social media.
  • Market the TJC Cheerleading program through community service and maintain the cheerleading website and social media accounts.
  • Travel with the squad to events, including out-of-town athletic events and competitions.
  • Recruit cheerleader candidates by visiting high schools and attending try-outs.
  • Recruit and oversee the Apache Flag Crew.
  • Assist with tryouts and auditions for new squad members each Spring.
  • Help with fundraising activities, including youth cheer camps and clinics.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and uniforms, ordering as needed.
  • Coordinate participation in cheerleading camps and competitions, including choreography and travel arrangements.
  • Ensure the health and safety of cheerleaders per established policies and guidelines.
  • Assist with special events hosted by the Center for Student Life & Involvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and Director of Student Life.
