About The Position

The Parole and Probation Officer is responsible for coordinating and developing the resources necessary to assist defendants when the Court orders probationary services or community services to be provided in-house. These duties are performed under the management of the Parole and Probation Supervisor and the Court Administrator.

Responsibilities

  • Provides an intense supervision and treatment-based program for the non-violent adult, mentally-ill and developmentally disabled participant who is homeless or indigent from the normal criminal justice process to positively impact the offender's life. Provides hope of rehabilitation through available services.
  • Performs a needs assessment, interviews, completes and enforces the conditions of a risk/needs assessment on each Court ordered offender to develop an individual treatment release plan.
  • Team approach to include the Parole and Probation officer, the supervisor, the service provider, defense attorney and prosecutor, as well as the administrative Judge.
  • Identifies and develops recommendations for sentencing, treatment or educational alternatives.
  • Liaises with other agencies such as Hopewell; Places For People; Community Alternatives; Barnes Jewish Hospital and the St. Patrick's Center.
  • Schedules monthly office visits and accompanies offender to monthly Court appearances providing the Judge with updated progress reports.
  • Adds probation docket entries into the Show Me Courts System.
  • Oversees, maintains and updates a caseload of 100 to 120 offenders and all necessary corresponding records and violation reports.
  • Maintains records and reports on client records, all reports and hearing materials, referrals, and status reports.
  • If faced with non-compliance, discretion is used to recommend sanctions ranging from intense residential treatment, jail time, or termination from program's services.
  • Liaises between the Court and prosecutor. Sentencing, recommendation, assignments to specific Courts from arraignment.
  • Assigned to do intake screening for offenders ordered to do community service or Court supervised probation and assign, track and assess the offenders' progress to report back to the Judge.
  • Ensures there is no duplication of services.
  • Home, work, school and doctor visits may be scheduled.
  • Maintains contact with probationer and refers to social service, mental health and City program services.
  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform mid-level data analysis including the ability to audit, deduce, assess, conclude and appraise. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established criteria to define consequences and develop alternatives.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to persuade, convince, influence, train and monitor parolees and probationers, in favor of a desired outcome.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as a computer, typewriter, copy machine, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as court orders, compliance plans, referral forms, status reports, statutes, procedures, guidelines and nonroutine correspondence.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition and subtraction.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as violence and disease.
  • Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort n sedentary to light work which may include some lifting and carrying of objects and materials weighing five (5) to ten (10) pounds, such as case files.
  • Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of colors, shapes, and sounds, associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
