About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY Performs repair and preventive maintenance of all Parks equipment, including light and heavy equipment. Performs scheduling and implementation of mowing and trimming timetables, chemical application and turf maintenance. Performs electrical, plumbing, and construction repair and deals directly with customers. Responsible for weekend, holiday, and special events activities during the course of the year. Provides care and maintenance to park grounds and vegetation. Responsible for planting, trimming, fertilizing, and applying pesticides to trees, shrubs, turf, and flowers. Provides design, installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems, pumping stations and wells. Programs sprinkler clocks and monitors computer system regarding irrigation systems. Creates and follows schedule for daily and monthly irrigation activities. Performs inspections on pumps, various pump equipment, and irrigation systems. Parks Technician - Maintenance Essential Duties & Responsibilities Assists other staff with various maintenance tasks and projects such as mowing, snow removal, special event set up, repairing trails, irrigation repair, pruning, fertilizing, trimming, construction, vandalism repairs, chemical spraying, etc. Handles weekend and holiday duties including special events. Cleans shelters before and after reserved events. Works with Recreation staff to assist with set-ups and tear downs of special events, including July 4 th Family Festival, Holiday Express, Summer Concert Series, Kids Stage and Celebrate Englewood setup. Repairs and maintains all light and heavy equipment. Responds to service calls in the field as well as shop repairs. Responds to the needs of the environment and customers. Maintains parks and recreation facilities utilizing tractor mowers and/or large mowers, hand tools, small power tools and dump trucks. Designs and constructs flower beds, bathrooms and drinking fountains; performs masonry, plumbing and electrical work as needed. Constructs and installs landscaping stairs, sheds, tie walls, bridges and playground equipment. Inspects playground equipment. Assists in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of retaining walls, buildings and park facilities. Assists in the installation of sprinkler systems, water taps, valves and other water systems as needed. Assists in training staff in the operation of tractors, backhoes, front end loaders, bucket trucks and other equipment as needed. Assists in deciding when new equipment is needed. Other Duties & Responsibilities Supervises the work of seasonal employees on special projects or assignments. Assists in trimming, fertilizing and spraying trees, shrubs, plants, etc.; removes decayed and diseased tissues; treats wounds, installs braces and cables. Cleans restrooms, picnic shelters and picks up trash. Orders parts when needed. Monitors inventory levels and performs preventive maintenance on equipment; troubleshoots and diagnoses inoperative equipment and machinery. May schedule maintenance repairs. Snow removal and special event set-up. Performs other duties as assigned and required. This position may potentially require weekend, holiday and evening work. Parks Technician - Horticulture Essential Duties & Responsibilities Plants, trims, fertilizes and applies pesticides to trees, shrubs, turf and flowers. Assists in identifying various plant diseases or insect pests and assists in determining the appropriate cultural, chemical or preventative measures necessary. Provides technical assistance to other City staff and citizens in the identification of insects and plant diseases, proper pruning, trimming and planting techniques along with other methods of plant care. Applies both restricted and general use pesticides as directed by federal and local regulations. Assists with the removal and pruning of dead, diseased or decaying trees. Designs flower beds and other landscapes. Repairs and maintains all park related equipment as needed. Operates light equipment and tools common to tree care, pruning and tree removal activities. Utilizes specialized equipment for horticulture including: tree pruners, chain saws, tree spade, stump grinder, fertilizer spreaders, seeder, boom truck, bucket truck, backhoe, loader, dump truck tractors, sprayers, top dresser, and chipper. Operates snow removal equipment including snowplows, ATV’s and tractor plows during the off-season on an as-needed basis. Other Duties & Responsibilities Supervises the work of seasonal employees on special projects or assignments. Assists with the Volunteer Flower Garden Program. Designs and installs landscape related construction projects. Performs other duties as assigned and required. This position may potentially require weekend, holiday and evening work. Parks Technician - Irrigation Essential Duties & Responsibilities Creates and follows schedule for daily and monthly irrigation activities. Responds to the environment and customer concern by maintaining and programming sprinkler clocks in the most conservative yet efficient manner possible. Operates hand tools, trencher and backhoe during installation and/or repair of irrigation systems and pumps. Performs routine inspections and maintenance of vertical and end suction pumps, pump motors and pump start equipment. Inspects and repairs rotary, gear drive and pop-up sprinkler heads. Reviews, updates and aids in the drawing of park irrigation blueprints. Reports the status of work projects to supervisor. Identifies work that requires additional resources to remain on schedule and coordinates the purchase of additional resources with the supervisor. Cuts, flares, and solders hard and soft copper pipe during installation and repair of water taps, and meters; cuts and glues PVC during installation and repair. Locates, traces, diagnoses and trouble-shoots electrical problems; troubleshoots, installs, repairs and inspects park irrigation systems and pumps. Operates snow removal equipment including snowplows and tractor plows in designated areas during the off-season as assigned. Other Duties & Responsibilities Supervises the work of seasonal employees on specials projects or assignments. Performs other duties as assigned and required. This position may potentially require weekend, holiday and evening work.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required
Minimum of 2 years of experience in any of the following areas: All phases of mechanical repair for light equipment and grounds keeping machinery Horticulture Park Maintenance Commercial Irrigation Systems (Experience working with park or golf course irrigation systems preferred) Landscaping
Valid Colorado driver’s license and a clear or acceptable MVR.
Colorado CDL Class B with air brake endorsement required to obtain within 6 months of employment.
Basic computer skills required to maintain daily reports such as tracking water pressure, well usage and program irrigation central controls, and to maintain CAD blueprints.
Advanced customer skills required to address the questions and complaints of the public.
Advanced analytical skills required to diagnose and troubleshoot in-field problems, and draft and read blueprints.
Advanced mechanical skills required to use the tools needed for completion of daily tasks and for maintaining and repairing equipment.
Must be able to operate light and heavy equipment.
Basic project management skills required to complete project schedules and to establish work schedule for assigned seasonal employees.
Basic mathematical skills required to calculate measurements and amount of fertilizer.

Nice To Haves

Associate’s degree or higher in horticulture, forestry or turf grass preferred.
Colorado Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicators License in Turf and Ornamental preferred within 1 year of employment
Experience working with park or golf course irrigation systems preferred
