About The Position

The Parks Technician I.II.III is under general supervision of the Parks Superintendent and Field Services Manager and performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair and construction of City parks, athletic fields, irrigation systems and related public facilities. Positions in this classification are flexibly staffed and are typically filled by advancement from level I or, when filled externally, may consider previous and directly related experience. Parks Technician I: The Parks Technician I is under general supervision; this is the entry-level class in the Parks series. Employees are not required to have directly related work experience. Work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion. Once trained in specific tasks, employees are expected to work with limited supervision. Parks Technician II: The Parks Technician II is under general supervision; this is the mid-level class in the Parks series. Employees assigned to this class are expected to perform a wide variety of skilled and technical assignments related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, streetscapes and open spaces. Positions at this level may oversee moderately complex tasks/projects. Employees at this level are expected to informally mentor and train less experienced technicians. Parks Technician III: The Parks Technician III is under general supervision; this is the most advanced class in the Parks series. Employees assigned to this class are expected to perform a wide variety of skilled and technical assignments related to the maintenance, repair and construction of parks, streetscapes, and open spaces with minimal instruction. Positions at this level will oversee advanced complex tasks/projects. Employees at this level are expected to mentor and train less experienced technicians.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • One year of related work experience.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain First Aid and CPR, Confined Space, and CDOT Flagger certifications within six months of hire.
  • Two years of directly related experience in parks, landscaping, or closely related field.
  • Sustainable Landscaping Management (SLM) Certification (similar certifications may be considered) or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Proficient operation of all standard park equipment (wide area mower, zero turn mowers, stand on mower, mini excavator, skid steer, plow truck and more)
  • One or more related certifications approved by the Parks Superintendent.
  • Four years of directly related experience in parks, landscaping, or closely related field.
  • Possession of a Class B commercial driver’s license.
  • Two certifications of the following options: Certified Playground Inspector, Certified Park and Recreation Professional, IA Certified Irrigation Repair Tech, IA Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor, Colorado licensed pesticide applicator (QS or Operator with a minimum of the Turf endorsement), ISA Arborist, NALP certificate (irrigation or maintenance).
  • Advanced proficiency in the operation of all standard park equipment. (Wide area mower, zero turn mowers, stand on mower, mini excavator, skid steer, plow truck and more)

Responsibilities

  • Performs park maintenance duties including various combinations of the following; irrigates, mows, weeds, trims, renovates, applies herbicide, and fertilizes turf areas; plants, irrigates, edges, prunes, and removes trees, shrubs, bushes, and flowers; clears snow, leaves, and debris from rights-of-way, sidewalks, and sports fields; graffiti removal; empties trash receptacles and transports rubbish, performs janitorial tasks at park public restrooms.
  • Conducts safety inspections for all park facilities, playgrounds, equipment, and public grounds. Reports damages or hazards to supervisor and assists in making necessary repairs.
  • May lead and oversee the work of seasonal employees.
  • Cleans and maintains park bathrooms, facilities, parks, open spaces, medians, irrigation ponds, athletic fields, cemetery grounds, and trails.
  • Removes snow with plows and de-ices city owned and or maintained sidewalks, parking lots, and roads.
  • Operates all necessary motorized equipment including mowers, pickup and dump trucks, pickup truck mounted plows, front end loaders, tractors, skid steer, excavators, utility vehicles, backhoe, and similar equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Assists with locating grave spaces, headstone placements and niche spaces; prepares excavations areas, at the cemetery. May assist with interment openings and closings following safety and ceremonial protocols.
  • Locates park managed utilities.
  • Assists with safety inspections on parks, opens spaces, playgrounds, and athletic fields.
  • Performs athletic field layout and marking.
  • Participates in special events, emergency response operations, and on-call rotations as required. Works weekends, holidays, and after hours as assigned.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment used in parks, grounds, and cemetery operations.
  • Operates vehicles used in parks construction and maintenance light dump trucks, tractors, mowers, aerators, sprayers, pickups, trailers, snowplows, backhoes, mini excavators, skid steer loaders, chippers, and others.
  • Operates power tools including chain saws, string trimmers, demo saws, bush cutters, jackhammers, tampers, concrete saws, pressure washers, blowers, and more.
  • Performs basic mower maintenance such as oil changes and blade sharpening.
  • May enter confined spaces utilizing proper personal protective equipment (PPE), related safety equipment and entry permits.
  • Assists any other city departments when needed.
  • Prioritizes personal and team safety at all times while at work.
  • Pursues ongoing professional development and industry-related training.
  • As a member of the City of Evans team, employees are privileged to serve each other and the community; therefore, will be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Skill in identifying, reporting, and managing field issues.
  • Cares for and ensures all city equipment is clean, safe, and maintained. Communicates needed repairs to fleet manager and parks superintendent.
  • Learn and perform repair and adjustment work in irrigation systems.
  • May lead parks staff as assigned.
  • Ability to lead parks crews in all types of operations.
  • Ability to train and motivate.
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Ability to prep and stripe athletic fields independently.
