About The Position

The Park Interpreter is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, and presenting interpretive and outdoor recreation-focused interpretive programs and special events for park visitors, civic groups, schools, and other organizations, to include demonstrations, talks, guided walks, and outdoor skills workshops. Programming focuses on facilitating engaging experiences and guiding park guests toward a personal sense of place regarding the cultural, historical, and natural resources within the collections and mission of Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources and south Arkansas. Position researches and records data regarding park resources and programs; writes detailed plans for programs; coordinates publicity efforts with the Communications section, including media releases, news articles, flyers, and brochures; may appear on local radio or television as needed; assists with care of museum artifacts and records; and occasionally delivers presentations using audio-visual equipment. Other duties include assisting with strategic planning; site maintenance; and performing office, front desk, and hospitality-related duties as necessary. Applicant may serve as park manager on duty in the absence of other personnel and assist in park operations including emergency response situations such as medical and weather incidents.

Requirements

  • At least two years of experience in interpretive programming, environmental education, museums, education, or a related field.
  • Technical and communication skills sufficient to plan and coordinate safe, organized, engaging programs and special events.
  • Ability to align interpretive programming for schools with Arkansas state curriculum standards.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work a varied shift, including weekends and holidays, and in widely varying weather conditions outdoors.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and technical skill in artifact care, museum records, archival research, public speaking, Microsoft Office software, photographic equipment, and writing of publications.

Responsibilities

  • Design and present educational programs, guided tours, and interactive exhibits focused on Arkansas’s natural and cultural heritage.
  • Engage visitors of all ages through storytelling, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
  • Conduct special events, living history programs, and nature walks to enhance visitor experiences.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by answering visitor inquiries and offering recommendations.
  • Collaborate with educators and community organizations to promote heritage tourism and outdoor education.
  • Assist in historical and environmental research to ensure program accuracy and authenticity.
  • Work with conservation staff to promote and protect natural and cultural resources.
  • Participate in historical reenactments, artifact preservation, and environmental stewardship projects.
  • Maintain interpretive tools, props, and presentation materials.
  • Keep records of program attendance, visitor feedback, and outreach efforts.
