Fort Delaware is a Civil War era river defense site that served as a prisoner-of-war facility during the American Civil War. The Assistant Superintendent works in conjunction with the Park Superintendent and Fort staff members in accommodating guests at Fort Delaware. Originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, Pea Patch Island also became a Union prison camp during the Civil War, housing up to as many as 10,048 Confederate prisoners of war at one time and was manned only briefly during World Wars I and II. Pea Patch Island Home to one of the largest Atlantic Coast nesting sites for herons, egrets, and ibises north of Florida. An estimated 5,000 – 12,000 breeding pairs call this heronry home annually.
