About The Position

This Parks & Recreation Aide 5 position will assist with park environmental education programming at Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center. Duties include, but are not limited to: Conduct environmental education programs by leading interpretive walks and following lesson plans. Complete roving programs throughout Jones Beach State Park. Plan, prepare and build displays, exhibits and other teaching aids. Support volunteer and internship programs. Assist in research, writing and producing educational and promotional materials. Clean and maintain facilities, garden, equipment, and exhibits. Greet visitors, special guests, students, and others and provide information on the building and exhibits. Care for animals, including feedings, exercise and cleanings of animals and their tanks. Lead programs involving a touch tank with local aquaria. Operate the cash register and keep track of purchases and receipts. Collect fees (cash, check, credit card) while always maintaining accuracy. Communicate with the public in a friendly, helpful, and courteous manner in person, over the phone, and via email correspondence. Perform general clerical duties. Perform other park-related tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must work 40 hours/week, typically 8:30am-5:00pm.
  • Weekend and holiday coverage required.
  • Special events may require schedule change.
  • Must work well under pressure.
  • Must be a self-starter and multitask.
  • Possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience with computers and good typing/computer skills are preferred.
  • Must be reliable, flexible, and willing to work in a team setting.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner under stressful conditions.
  • Must have the ability to speak in front of groups.
