About The Position

The City of Portage is looking for a responsible, self-motivated, and independent Park Ranger to join our Parks and Recreation Department! Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required, must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be available year-round for 21-28 hours/week.
  • Strong open availability for all three shifts (days, evenings, and weekends, and can include holidays):
  • The Ranger schedule consists of three to four shifts ranging from 7-8 hours each per week (21-28 hours/week).
  • Hours/shifts vary depending on the park's seasonal hours of operation. Standard Winter hours & shifts are three to four 7-hour shifts per week. Standard Spring/Summer/Fall hours & shifts are three 8-hour shifts per week.
  • Seasonal Park Hours: Winter (Nov. 1- Feb): 7 AM-7 PM;
  • Spring/Fall (Mar-April & Sept.-Oct) 7 AM-9 PM;
  • Summer (May-Aug.) 7 AM -10 PM
  • Shifts: Open Shift:  6 AM - 2 PM (Park opens at 7 AM)
  • Patrol Shift: 10 AM - 6 PM or 11 AM - 7 PM (depending on season)
  • Close Shift:  2 PM – Close or 3 PM - Close (depending on season)
  • Comfortable working in all types of weather and bicycling/walking/hiking for a distance.
  • Experience working with the public is preferred, with excellent leadership, judgment, and customer service skills required.
  • A valid State of Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record is required.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. or more on a regular basis.
  • Candidate must be able to successfully pass a general background check and drug/alcohol screen, including marijuana.

Responsibilities

  • Open/Close park entrances, patrol parks, engage with patrons, and enforce and educate patrons regarding park rules.
  • Assist with events, such as concerts, movies, Ramona Park Luau, Ramona Park bonfire, Pig Out in the Park, receptions at Celery Flats, reading or hiking with a ranger, Monster Mash, and traditional holiday set-up.  Direct traffic and parking and assist with set-up and tear-down of events.
  • Monitor, identify, and report necessary maintenance needs.
  • Participate in the operation of the Millennium Ice Rink from December through February.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
