About The Position

This position requires flexible availability, which includes day, evening/night, weekend hours, and holidays. The Park Ranger is responsible for ensuring a clean and safe park for users and guests, enforcing park policies and rules, reporting and monitoring hazardous conditions, reporting suspicious activity to the appropriate agencies, and providing general customer service at City of Apopka park and recreational facilities. Work is performed under the direction of the Recreation Manager, or designee, and is reviewed through observation and results achieved. Essential job functions include providing in-person customer service, responding to inquiries, requests for assistance, and complaints, explaining and enforcing all City park and recreation policies, and opening and closing facilities according to posted schedules. The role also involves completing routine facility safety inspections, assisting with general cleanup and appearance of facilities (including picking up loose trash and restocking restrooms), and applying basic first aid (including CPR/AED) or taking emergency measures to ensure the well-being of park users and guests. The work requires constant public contact, use of the telephone, reading, writing, typing, frequent walking, sitting, standing, and occasional lifting of 40 lbs., bending, stooping, running, pushing, pulling, kneeling, crawling, climbing, swimming, and reaching overhead. The Park Ranger frequently works in extreme weather and, as duties require, operates a utility cart, car, pick-up truck, and/or other related City vehicles. The ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is required, and other duties or tasks may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate park and recreation facility rules and regulations to park users, guests, and customers.
  • Ability to understand event or program layouts in a variety of City park locations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other city employees, officials, volunteers, civic groups and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to hear, run and swim in order to provide public safety functions.
  • Ability to safely operate a utility cart and other City vehicles.
  • Familiarity with computers and word-processing in general and initiative to learn all facets of software as may be utilized for maximum utilization.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Minimum a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • One-year experience in performing progressively responsible recreational or security related duties.
  • Class D Security License.
