About The Position

This position involves working in Yosemite National Park within the Visitor and Resource Protection Division, focusing on wilderness patrol duties and visitor education. The role is temporary, with an anticipated entry on duty in April 2025, and includes responsibilities such as issuing wilderness use permits, conducting resource protection patrols, and providing emergency medical treatment. The position requires a high degree of physical fitness and the ability to work in remote wilderness areas.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must possess Wilderness Travel and Living Skills, including backcountry navigation and Leave No Trace camping.
  • Certification as a Wilderness First Responder or higher-level certification is required.
  • At least one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-04 level in the Federal service, or education equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in park-related work such as environmental education, law enforcement, or recreation management.
  • Ability to work in high visitor use areas and remote wilderness locations.

Responsibilities

  • Issue wilderness use permits in accordance with the park's management plan using a computerized reservation system.
  • Inform visitors of special concerns such as fire restrictions, areas closed to camping, and park regulations.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, commercial outfitters, and other agencies regarding permit systems and natural resources.
  • Develop and present interpretive programs on wilderness philosophy, safety, and history.
  • Perform resource protection foot patrols in wilderness areas, including visitor contacts and education.
  • Monitor commercial use permits for compliance with park-established conditions.
  • Provide emergency medical treatment to visitors and employees, maintaining Wilderness First Responder qualifications.
