About The Position

The position of Climbing Ranger at Yosemite National Park involves conducting public outreach programs, performing patrol duties in both high visitor use areas and remote wilderness, and participating in search and rescue operations. Climbing Rangers are responsible for educating climbers about safety, current conditions, and Leave No Trace principles while also maintaining access trails and overseeing volunteer activities. This role requires a strong background in climbing and wilderness first aid, as well as the ability to work in challenging outdoor conditions.

Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-04 level in the Federal service, including technical, administrative, or scientific work related to park management.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or higher at the time of application.
  • Experience in climbing outreach and patrol duties, including multi-day rock climbs and expertise in climbing 5.11 and A2 routes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading volunteers on group projects.
  • Supervisory experience in outdoor or park settings.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct public outreach programs such as Ask-A-Climber and Climber Coffee.
  • Provide informal interpretive programs focusing on rock climbing and Yosemite's climbing history.
  • Meet with climbers to provide information on current route conditions and safety practices.
  • Perform basic maintenance on access trails and assist with larger volunteer trail projects.
  • Oversee daily activities of volunteer climbing stewards.
  • Participate in search and rescue operations.
  • Assist in instructing high angle rope rescue courses and climbing safety programs.
