About The Position

The Backcountry Ranger position with the US National Park Service involves patrolling and maintaining trails in rugged terrain, ensuring compliance with camping regulations, and providing natural and cultural information to park visitors. Rangers will participate in search and rescue operations, maintain campsites, and work collaboratively with various park divisions. This role requires physical endurance and the ability to work in inclement weather while living in backcountry settings for extended periods.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • At least 1 year of leadership experience required.
  • Ability to backpack and hike up to 15 miles per day carrying packs weighing up to 40 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Wilderness First Responder or higher-level EMS certification.
  • Previous backpacking experience.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol and maintain trails in backcountry areas.
  • Check for compliance with park camping and hiking regulations.
  • Provide natural and cultural historical information to visitors.
  • Participate in search and rescue training and operations.
  • Keep backcountry use logs and perform campsite maintenance.
  • Conduct wilderness patrols and monitor impacts to park resources.
  • Inform visitors of wilderness camping regulations and maintain trail infrastructure.
  • Complete wilderness and use documentation and respond to emergency incidents.
