About The Position

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the designated swimming area behind the Beach House. Assists in day-to-day operations of the public Beach House. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Certifications: Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED with Waterfront Module (required), and Oxygen (preferred), Lifeguard Supervisor certification for guards with more than three months of experience. Waterfront Module and Oxygen training can be provided upon hire.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Successful completion of the Lake Superior Y’s Lifeguard Assessment prior to employment
  • Commitment of supporting principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action to achieve a diverse work environment.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check.
  • Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods in different weather conditions.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the designated swimming area with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Must not have more than an average of a 25-dB loss in both ears over a range of frequencies (500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz and 3000 Hz).

  • One-year post-high school experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant surveillance of the designated swimming area.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the public and other staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the aquatic area.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies City of Duluth Park Rules within the Park Point Rec area.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Checks the designated area for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  • Maintain current certifications.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
