About The Position

The Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a Park Manager position to manage Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park. This park is a unique facility that is a collaborative effort between the Parks Division and the Natural Resources Division. This beautiful park features miles of nature trails, multi-purpose athletic fields and ongoing capital improvement projects, offering endless opportunities for community engagement and outdoor activities. This is a Monday through Friday position, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Performs park facility management operations work. Incumbent hires schedules, assigns, and supervises primarily seasonal workers. The work involves supervising and performing park operations including visitor services, park maintenance and repair, and enforcement of park rules and regulations. The work requires prior experience. Work is performed under general supervision.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of-- General maintenance and land management procedures.
  • Effective techniques of supervision.
  • Ability to-- Perform and supervise park operations work.
  • Perform outdoor maintenance work including the operation of related equipment.
  • Manage staff, daily operations, and policy development and implementation.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others encountered in the work.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Enforce park rules and regulations.
  • Deal effectively with the public.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Recreation, Natural Resources Management, or related degree.
  • Two years of progressive responsibility in park management or park operations that includes considerable experience managing staff, daily operations, customer service and policy development and implementation.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Operation of County owned vehicle.
  • Subject to background investigation.
  • Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 49 pounds;
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Exposed to hazards of working with tools.

Responsibilities

  • Manages daily park operations and ensures services are open and ready for the public.
  • Plans and implements educational, interpretive and recreational programs, and special events for all age groups.
  • Interprets natural and historical aspects of the park to the general public and groups.
  • Schedules and assigns work to staff and volunteers; participates in and initiates actions regarding hiring, payroll, leave, performance, and other personnel actions.
  • Responds to inquiries from the public regarding park operations.
  • Enforces park rules and regulations and monitors park boundaries for trespass issues.
  • Responds to complaints, incidents and injuries and serves as the liaison for the community.
  • Performs general maintenance of park facilities and equipment involving painting, carpentry and other general maintenance tasks.
  • Orders supplies.
  • Maintains records, prepares reports, and accounts for all money collected.
  • Recommends facility improvements and repairs and new projects that will enhance the mission of the park.
  • Manages contracts associated with the facility.
  • Performs related work as required.
