About The Position

The City of Bishop is accepting applications for the position of Park Helper. This part time position performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and landscaping duties at the Bishop City Park and other City facilities. This position is a part-time position. DEFINITION To perform a variety of skilled gardening, maintenance and repair duties, as well as programming of educational and recreational activities for parks, recreational grounds and facilities. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from the Park Supervisor and/or Parks, Recreation and Facility Worker. May exercise functional and technical supervision over seasonal personnel. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Perform maintenance activities on parks and recreational buildings and facilities including clean and perform maintenance on restrooms; maintain supplies for restrooms, painting, light carpentry, light plumbing and other tasks; pick up rubbish and paper, perform general grounds cleaning. Maintain plantings, lawns and grounds in city parks and facilities and landscaped areas; plant, water, weed, mow and trim lawns, plants, hedges, shrubs and trees. Maintain and prepare athletic fields and other recreational areas for community use; perform minor repairs on parks and civic facilities. Spade and otherwise cultivate ground around plants and shrubs, including mining and applying fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides. Perform maintenance on sprinklers and irrigation equipment. Assist Community Services Director in the implementation of educational and recreational programs. Maintain equipment used in the school ski program; assist in the transportation and distribution of ski equipment. Assist in the removal of snow from parks and recreational areas, when needed. Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Proper and effective use of park and landscape maintenance tools, equipment and materials.
  • Principles and practices of constructing and maintaining athletic fields, playgrounds and related recreational facilities.
  • Basic maintenance and repair of sprinkler and irrigation equipment. Basic techniques of carpentry, plumbing and painting.
  • Ability to: Perform semi-skilled and skilled gardening, and park and facility maintenance work.
  • Work independently and assume responsibility for an assigned area.
  • Operate mowers, edgers, tractors, saws, drills and other equipment.
  • Competently care for plants, shrubs, turf and trees; properly water and fertilize.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • One year of experience performing a variety of parks and grounds maintenance activities.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license.
