About The Position

The Parent Coordinator at Brooklyn Community High School for Excellence and Equity plays a vital role in fostering parental engagement within the school community. This position involves collaborating with the principal, school staff, and various community organizations to create a welcoming environment for parents, particularly those with limited English proficiency. The Parent Coordinator will address school and community issues, facilitate communication between parents and the school, and organize events to enhance parental involvement in education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work related to the duties described; or an Associate's degree and four years of experience; or a high school diploma and six years of experience in community work.
  • Familiarity with the New York City public school system.
  • Experience with convening workshops.
  • Bilingual, especially in areas with significant non-English speaking populations.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Conflict resolution and mediation skills.
  • Experience working with families and parents in education and/or community issues.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Increase parent involvement in the school by collaborating with school, parent, and community organizations.
  • Serve as a facilitator for parent and school community concerns, including school policies and facilities issues.
  • Conduct outreach to engage parents in their children's education.
  • Convene regular parent meetings and events around key concerns to parents.
  • Attend parent meetings alongside the principal when appropriate.
  • Assist the school parent association in establishing by-laws, holding elections, and conducting their affairs according to Chancellor's Regulation A-660.
  • Act as a liaison to Central and Field-based parent support staff.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with community organizations providing services to the school's educational program.
  • Organize back-to-school and other events to increase parental and community involvement.
