About The Position

The Paraprofessional III position at Gateway Unified School District is designed to assist the Classroom Teacher, Principal, or Designee in a severely handicapped special education environment. The role involves providing support in various instructional areas, tutoring students with special needs, and helping to manage student behavior through positive reinforcement strategies. Requirements

  • Must meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind.
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices for students with special needs.
  • Knowledge of behavior management strategies for students with control problems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform routine clerical tasks and operate educational and office equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with children in an organized setting, preferably as a Paraprofessional.
  • Education from high school with training in child growth and development or special education.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the instructional personnel in assigned instructional areas.
  • Tutors individual students and small groups of students with special needs.
  • Assists in shaping appropriate social behaviors.
  • Manages acting out student behavior using positive reinforcement strategies.
  • Operates and assists students with instructional aids and computer-assisted instruction.
  • Monitors and assists in the remediation of specific learning problems.
  • May administer medication according to medical instructions.
  • Performs routine first aid and requests assistance for non-routine injuries.
  • Observes and monitors children with handicapping conditions.
  • Maintains an orderly and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in parent conferences and student progress report activities.
  • Provides skill-building activities for children with language and hearing disorders.
  • Shares observations with the teacher.
  • Assists with general campus supervision and discipline.
  • Prepares materials, maintains records, and obtains supplies.
  • Performs screen-testing when requested.
  • Attends job-related in-services, conferences, and staff meetings.
  • Assists students with personal needs such as hygiene and feeding.

Benefits

  • Salary range of $18.88 - $25.38 per hour.
