About The Position

The Special Education/Integrated Services position involves providing instructional and physical support to students with significant support needs, enabling them to participate fully in classroom activities. The role includes assisting teachers in implementing educational plans, personal care, and monitoring student behavior.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of related experience.
• Experience working with special needs students preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.
• Criminal background check required for hire.
• Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification required within 3 months of hire.
• Completion of Special Education Paraprofessional Academy classes (5 in the first 2 years of hire).

Responsibilities

• Assist the General Classroom or Special Education Teacher with implementing instruction and reinforcing learning skills in individual or small groups.
• Adapt curriculum to individual student needs and monitor acceptable social and physical behavior.
• Implement daily and long-range lessons and activities to meet Individual Education Plans (IEP), behavior plans, and health care plans.
• Assist with specialized occupational therapy and physical therapy programs and activities.
• Support students with personal care, social skills, and self-awareness, including assistance with health and hygiene tasks.
• Lift, transfer, or push students in wheelchairs as needed.
• Use alternative language techniques such as sign language or voice-activated computer systems for students with disabilities.
• Prepare materials, administer tests, grade, take attendance, and maintain student records.
• Monitor students during classroom activities, breaks, lunch, and field trips.
• Reinforce school-wide discipline procedures and assist with special projects as needed.
