About The Position

The role of the Special Education Paraprofessional Educator ASL/English is to provide direct instructional and support services to deaf and hard of hearing students who require a visual sign language to access instructional information. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
  • Must meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, OR a passing score of 459 or greater on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, OR passing the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, OR passing the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
  • Within three years of employment must meet the standard of an Intermediate+ rating on the Sign Communication Proficiency interview.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation of staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English.
  • Ability to use American Sign Language to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing children and staff members.
  • An associate's degree or higher; or have met a rigorous standard of quality demonstrated through a formal state or local academic assessment.
  • Intermediate SLPI score within the past three years.
  • Knowledge of first aid.
  • Knowledge of how deaf and hard of hearing children relate to their educational environment, and how to meet their visual and auditory communication needs.
  • Knowledge of technology relevant to the education of deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Knowledge of deaf culture and how it can affect education of deaf and hard of hearing children.
  • Ability to use office equipment such as computers, educational software, photocopiers, video cameras/projectors, videophones, and telephone relay services.
  • Ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Ability to use interpreting services for in-service training and meetings if needed.
  • Familiarity with the deaf community and resources available for the education of deaf and hard of hearing children.

Responsibilities

  • Provides instructional services to students either individually or in small groups under the direct supervision of a teacher using materials and tools designated by the teacher.
  • Assists in physical care tasks and health-related activities as appropriate.
  • Assists students with behavioral/management needs.
  • Assists with data collection and other tasks related to documenting student progress in learning and goal attainment.
  • Assists with classroom management, such as organizing instructional materials, supervising students on field trips, during lunch/recess/to and from buses, and in learning activities outside of their regular classroom.
  • Assists in the technical preparation and production of media programs.
  • Facilitates communication in any educational setting that the deaf and hard of hearing students attend.
  • Provides the teaching staff with information about the students that will assist the teacher with the development of appropriate learning and behavioral experiences.
  • Assists in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or reading readiness, writing readiness, and math readiness when working with early childhood.
  • Uses interpreting services for in-service training and meetings.
