Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic (NREMT - Paramedic) Defensive driving certification
  • Licensed through the Louisiana Department of Health - Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P)
  • 2 years of EMS related experience
  • American Heart Association BLS, PALS (within 6 months), and ACLS certifications.
  • Louisiana Office Of Motor Vehicles driver's license - Class D
  • Crisis Prevention Institute Non-Violent Crisis Prevention (CPI, NCI-CPI) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a primary and secondary survey on every patient to ensure that all illnesses or injuries are found and treated rapidly.
  • Ensure that all the proper equipment is brought to the patient to begin immediate medical care as required.
  • Ensure that the patient maintains a patent airway and uses several different airway devices up to the ET tube based on the situation.
  • Control all major bleeding and use acceptable techniques when applying direct pressure, elevation or pressure points to the use of a tourniquet.
  • Transport patients safely and to the facility of choice on all calls and recognizes the need to transport critical patients to the closest hospital.
  • Contact medical control and relays patient reports over the radio to the physician in-charge and follows direct order to continue care while in transport to the hospital.
  • Document in descriptive legible form on the PCR the patient's condition, noting initial impression, medical history and any treatment rendered noting pertinent negatives/positives.
  • Keep dispatch informed of departures, arrivals and any other related important information via the radio at all times.
  • Apply the needed skills to replace and repackage all equipment that is used during a call.
