About The Position

The Vascular Access Assistant (Paramedic) supports the Vascular Access and Procedural Services team at Longstreet Clinic by performing advanced clinical tasks related to patient preparation, vascular access, perioperative support, and post‑procedure care. This role assists physicians, nurses, and technologists in delivering safe, efficient, and compassionate care across the pre‑operative, intra‑operative, and post‑operative continuum. The Vascular Access Assistant utilizes paramedic‑level skills to perform IV insertion, ultrasound‑guided vascular access, medication administration within scope, sterile preparation, and patient education.

Requirements

  • Active State of Georgia Paramedic (EMT-P) license.
  • BLS and ACLS certification.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in acute care, emergency medicine, or procedural environments.
  • Demonstrated competency in IV insertion and vascular access techniques.
  • Good clinical skills and knowledge
  • Ability to work in a changing fast pace environment
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary setting (physicians, nurses, technical staff)

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in vascular access (e.g., VA‑BC) or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience in perioperative, interventional radiology, vascular access, or critical care settings.
  • Prior experience with ultrasound‑guided IV insertion.

Responsibilities

  • Vascular Access & Clinical Procedures Performs peripheral IV insertion and ultrasound‑guided IV placement in accordance with departmental competency standards.
  • Assists with vascular access procedures, line maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Prepares and maintains sterile fields; assists with minor procedures requiring sterile technique.
  • Performs basic suturing and wound closure support as permitted by scope and competency.
  • Operates procedural equipment including ultrasound, C‑arm fluoroscopy (after competency), and related imaging devices.
  • Assists providers during bedside and procedural interventions, ensuring proper equipment setup and patient positioning.
  • Conducts pre‑procedure patient assessments and verifies medical history, allergies, and procedural readiness.
  • Provides patient education regarding procedures, expectations, and aftercare instructions.
  • Prepares patients for surgery or procedures, including skin prep, draping, and sterile scrub assistance.
  • Ensures all required supplies, instruments, and equipment are available and functioning.
  • Functions as a scrub assistant during minor procedures within scope and competency.
  • Anticipates provider needs and ensures safe, efficient workflow.
  • Maintains sterile technique and adheres to infection‑prevention standards.
  • Assists with medication preparation and administering medications as permitted by Paramedic scope and organizational policy.
  • Provides immediate post‑procedure monitoring, including vital signs, pain assessment, and complication surveillance.
  • Delivers post‑operative patient education, including wound care, activity restrictions, and follow‑up instructions.
  • Completes patient discharge processes, ensuring understanding of care plans and documentation requirements.
  • Communicates patient status and concerns to the RN or provider promptly.
  • Accurately documents all procedures, assessments, and interventions in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, technologists, and ancillary staff to support coordinated care.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and maintains required competencies.
