About The Position

This is responsible work involving the protection of life through the performance of emergency medical services, providing basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene of emergencies and while transporting sick and injured patients to medical care facilities. An employee in this class is responsible for working as an emergency medical team member who may direct personnel at an emergency scene and directly reports to the Paramedic Supervisor. This is a 'mandatory-testing position' that requires Drug Testing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test.
  • Completion of emergency medical coursework at the Paramedic level.
  • Valid driver's license from state of residence.
  • Valid Florida Paramedic Certification.
  • AHA CPR Certification.
  • AHA ACLS Certification.
  • Must obtain EVOC certification during orientation process.
  • Must be certified by the Escambia County Medical Director upon employment and must maintain certification as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates an emergency medical vehicle in non-emergency and emergency situations including to and from emergency scene, determining most efficient route and maintaining situational awareness in order to prevent accidents.
  • Identifies and manages life threatening emergencies by initiating basic and advanced life support while following protocols and physician orders.
  • Initiates and assists Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians in patient treatment to acutely ill or traumatized patients both on the scene and while in route to the hospital, utilizing both invasive and non-invasive techniques and initial protocol treatment based on patient condition.
  • Establishes rapport with the patient and others to decrease incident stress by remaining calm and communicating medical conditions with patients, family members, and applicable medical staff.
  • Prepares patient care reports, which involves documenting medical conditions and activities applied to patients and using a personal computer.
  • Records patient care data and information obtaining demographic data from patients, medical conditions and/or illnesses, and current prescription use as well as documents patient reactions to treatment.
  • Monitors and maintains ambulance units for readiness, ensuring required equipment and related medical inventory are available and ready for use and that the vehicle is clean and disinfected.
  • Coordinates efforts with other staff and those of other agencies to maximize the efficiency of patient care by maintaining contact with and communicating with dispatch personnel and/or patient receiving facilities.
  • Secures and disposes of biohazard waste.
  • Assists in the management of controlled substances.
  • Assess patient response to treatment and, in consultation with medical control, alters treatment accordingly.
  • May exercise independent judgment in the application of specific official medical protocol established by the medical control physicians.
  • Attends continuing education and other programs to maintain clinical knowledge and certification requirements.

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as needed.
