About The Position

As required by our governmental client, this position requires an active Public Trust clearance or the ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance to be considered. Cherokee Federal Solutions is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Paralegal to join our esteemed team, specializing in criminal and civil cases. As a Paralegal with 0-2 years of experience, you will play a vital role in assisting our attorneys with various legal tasks, ensuring the seamless preparation and processing of complex legal documents. Requirements

  • One year of professional experience with basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum and must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, shall be proficient in Microsoft Office software programs (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook).
  • Experience in attention to detail and the ability to read and follow directions.
  • Basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of e-discovery procedures and resources.
  • Education: 2-year degree or higher, or High School Diploma or equivalent and Paralegal Certificate. Work experience can be substituted for paralegal certificate.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal

Responsibilities

  • Examines, prepares, and processes a variety of technical legal documents that are characteristically voluminous and complex in format.
  • Reviews incoming material and independently determines the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas.
  • Obtains needed information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources, and submits completed legal documents to the appropriate AUSA or, in limited cases, directly to the court.
  • In preparation of documents, considers the nature and the status of the case involved.
  • With instructions from the AUSA, prepares such legal documents as indictments, criminal complaints, grand jury subpoenas, warrants, civil complaints, civil answers, civil discovery, civil subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and other legal documents.
  • Ensures legal documents conform to the rules governing their style and format.
  • Aids attorneys in case preparation by performing duties such as independently preparing deposition materials, assisting with hearing preparation, preparing materials for meetings and proffers, compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists.
  • Coordinates with the victim/witness specialist to ensure adherence to current Departmental guidelines relating to victims' rights and services responsibilities.
  • Notifies appropriate individuals of victim/witness issues.
  • Using original and online legal resources, verifies citations and statutory references contained in legal documents.
  • Ensures citations are complete and consistent with source material.
  • Develops tables of contents and indices to briefs in accordance with established format.
  • Lists cited cases, opinions, and miscellaneous references in briefs.
  • Composes original letters and emails that require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology, e.g., transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time in certain cases, advising of actions taken or developments in cases referred by other federal departments and agencies, and notices to attorneys representing defendants.
  • Scans/inputs and links case-related materials into an electronic database and manages that database.
  • Manages discovery and trial preparation.
  • Files legal documents, including in the federal ECF system and in state court filing systems.
  • Is familiar with state and federal rules regarding filing documents.
  • Provides a variety of ancillary office support functions requiring some subject-matter knowledge of the assigned unit's programs and operations.
  • Produces a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications.
  • Provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations.
  • Utilizes various software applications and graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters.
  • Prepares documents, charts, and visual materials used in trials.
  • Provides technical support e.g., enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
