About The Position

The Maricopa County Department of Correctional Health Services (CHS) seeks a motivated, organized, and efficient Paralegal Supervisor to help drive continuous improvement initiatives across the organization. This position also oversees the daily operations of CHS-Forensic Services and supervises the Forensic Contract Supervisor and three Forensic Services Specialists. The Paralegal Supervisor is a subject matter expert and works on the most complex assignments that require independent discretion and judgment.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or higher in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or Legal Assistance OR Associate degree or higher in any field, and a certificate of completion from a Legal Assistant program or Paralegal Studies program
  • Five years of experience as a Legal Assistant or Paralegal
  • One year of lead or supervisory experience in a legal environment
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license upon hire
  • Ability to pass a fingerprint background check and maintain MCSO jail access

Nice To Haves

  • Experience handling complex discovery requests for civil litigation or as a courtroom clerk
  • Experience with correctional healthcare administrative duties

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all legal matters for CHS
  • Ensures departmental compliance with legal mandates and court-ordered deadlines
  • Accept service of process/legal documents, such as Notices of Claim, complaints, and subpoenas, for the department and CHS employees
  • Coordinate and schedule employee/attorney interviews and depositions
  • Supervise the daily operations of CHS Forensic Services to provide court-ordered competency services to the Superior Court judiciary
  • Delegates/assigns tasks to subordinate legal staff (Forensic Contract Supervisor and Forensic Services Specialists)
  • Monitor workloads and evaluate performance
  • Use computerized research tools to conduct legal research on statutes, cases, and other sources for legal precedents and regulation compliance, including professional Boards, State records retention requirements, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Coordinate and fulfill time-sensitive litigation discovery requests in civil and criminal matters
  • Conduct policy review analysis
  • Draft and distribute various legal documentation, such as: Patient Death Notifications and Compassionate Release Letters
  • Coordinate Litigation Hold Requests.
  • Assists MCAO civil attorneys to comply with court orders that require specific action by CHS, by requesting, gathering, and reviewing health information/supporting evidence via thorough confirmation of medical care and documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders: CHS Leadership, Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO), Risk Management, Enterprise Technology and Innovation (ETI), Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), and all five branches of Public Defense Services (PDS): Public Defender, Legal Defender, Legal Advocate, Public Advocate, and Contract Counsel
  • Attend weekly interdisciplinary case management meetings for continuity of care and reports on criminal case information, such as criminal charges and upcoming court dates
  • Comprehensively tracks all legal functions, compiles statistical data for the legal division, and reports data analysis to CHS Leadership
  • Evaluate legal division needs
  • make recommendations for process improvements and information flow
  • and update internal procedures when approved modifications occur
  • Use critical thinking skills to resolve/troubleshoot complex and sensitive work issues
  • Deliver mentoring, training, and support on legal topics to direct reports, staff, and leadership
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership
