About The Position

This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the levels posted, depending on their level of experience and depth of expertise. The paralegal provides a wide range of professional legal support services to attorneys in the form of basic legal research, summarizing legal documents, providing litigation and pre-trial discovery support, FERC regulation compliance, analyzing data, drafting of legal and business communications. The position involves working in a professional environment and occasional contact with the public, governmental agencies, law firms, management and co-workers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree. (Typically four years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)
  • Four or more years working experience in a legal environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic legal terms, proficiency in legal, internet and traditional research tools.
  • Strong organizational skills, particularly working with document control.
  • Strong personal computer skills; proficient in Word and Excel.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of company/corporate information.
  • Ability to build relationships with a variety of employees and non-employees.
  • Ability to analyze and/or derive statistical or other mathematical data.
  • Ability to obtain information despite real or perceived road blocks.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in employment, litigation, or the energy industry helpful.
  • Persons with a certified legal assistant (CLA), certified paralegal (CP) or advanced paralegal (AP) designation will be given preference.

Responsibilities

  • Perform legal, business and regulatory research, including FERC regulations, and communicate findings in memoranda; create electronic resource libraries as needed.
  • Collect, review and organize information and/or documents including regulatory filings and compliance documentation create procedures for collection and storage of information; create procedures for law department or corporate practices; analyze or derive statistical or other mathematical data.
  • Locate and interview potential witnesses; coordinate communications between witnesses and attorneys, in-house counsels and/or company personnel and outside counsels.
  • Draft and revise agreements, answers, discoveries, motions, filings, regulatory submissions, and other documents in appropriate format and subject to an attorney's final approval.
  • Monitor developments in Northern Natural Gas's company pending cases, claims and regulatory matters; report to attorneys and management as necessary.
  • Draft periodic legal and regulatory reports and summaries for management; create, maintain and update charts of legal activities, regulatory filings and expenses.
  • Create and maintain paper and electronic files for trademarks, litigation, regulatory filings, and other claims.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
