The Paralegal II position at the State of New Hampshire's Department of Health and Human Services involves performing paralegal activities to support attorneys in the Bureau of General Counsel. This role includes legal writing, research, and assisting with discovery and hearing preparation, as well as managing legal documents and communications with various parties involved in legal cases.

  • Responsible for all aspects of the production of discovery for high impact complex litigation, including identifying custodians, gathering and organizing documents, reviewing documents for responsiveness, and applying appropriate privilege and redaction indicators.
  • Conducts pretrial litigation tasks for DHHS attorneys and trial preparation by coordinating interviews with witnesses, obtaining and organizing documentary evidence, and preparing exhibits for hearings.
  • Develops legal documents for review and use by Department attorneys, including motions and objections to motions.
  • Prepares proposed orders, briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents relative to court and administrative hearings.
  • Issues subpoenas and coordinates availability of witnesses to ensure their appearance for court and administrative hearings.
  • Conducts legal research and reviews and analyzes statutes, rules, and regulations in researching data for use in legal cases as assigned by the attorneys.
  • Communicates orally and in writing with opposing counsel, the courts, and other state and federal agencies.
  • Facilitates flow of information between all parties in a case.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement personnel, judges, and the general public.
  • Uses a variety of automated tools and processes, such as the Legal Files case management system, to manage, organize, and monitor legal cases.
  • Responds to Right to Know requests by issuing five-day letters, coordinating with program areas within the Department, redacting responsive documents, and entering requests and correspondence into Legal Files.
  • Supervises, assigns, and reviews work to support staff and interns, including scanning and maintenance of documents and files.
  • Associate's degree or two years of college with a major study in law, paralegal studies, or a related legal field, or a paralegal certificate from a certified paralegal program.
  • Three years' experience in legal research, legal investigative work, paralegal work, criminal justice, or an area that provided experience with legal terminology.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or access to transportation for statewide travel.
