About The Position

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. This position offers a salary range of $51,580- $72,159, with potential for advancement up to $79,673 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $72,159. The OAG is seeking applicants for a Paralegal II at the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). This office is the primary legal advisor to DHCD, which also includes a bond-issuing and lending entity (Community Development Administration), and a loan insurance entity (Maryland Housing Fund). The Paralegal will join a team of 19, including 12 attorneys and 7 professional staff. This position will provide paralegal support to approximately 4 attorneys in conjunction with 2 other staff members working with DHCD’s multifamily financing programs. DHCD finances affordable multi-family and single-family housing and provides several programs and services that support its vision that all Marylanders will have the opportunity to live and prosper in affordable, lovable and just communities. The Paralegal will provide support to Assistant Attorneys General and Administrative Officers relating to commercial lending, real estate transactions, and other transactional work in connection with financing affordable rental housing projects throughout the State of Maryland.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.
  • Applicants should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word or comparable word processing skills, experience with virtual meetings and the Google platform, and possess organizational skills and an ability to consistently produce a high volume of work.
  • Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university or graduation from a four-year college may be substituted for the required work experience.
  • Thirty credit hours from an accredited law school may be substituted for the required experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated proficiency in legal research, including familiarity with online research platforms (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis, or similar)
  • Experience drafting, reviewing, and formatting legal documents and correspondence

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and edit loan and grant documents
  • File, track, and review pre-closing and post-closing loan and grant documents and due diligence materials
  • Prepare and maintain checklists to accurately reflect the status of closing materials
  • Manage project closing files, ensuring documents are current, organized, and easily accessible.
  • Prepare and manage closing transcripts or binders ensuring receipt of complete and fully executed copies of all necessary closing documents
  • Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and summaries for internal and external use.
  • Communicate with clients and third parties to gather information and relay updates.
  • Attend weekly closing calls with all financing participants for each assigned project
  • Perform legal research as directed by the Attorneys.
  • Assist with scheduling meetings
