About The Position

The Paralegal I will serve clients facing legal challenges who are eligible for 603 Legal Aid’s (603LA) services via the highest standard of legal professionalism. Working under the supervision of a staff attorney, the paralegal will identify and implement the most appropriate strategy for meeting client needs. This role primarily involves administrative and routine legal work to assist attorneys in client service and case management.

Requirements

  • Paralegal certificate or a degree in a related field (a degree may substitute for one year of experience).
  • 0- 2 years of relevant experience recommended.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage cases with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and general comfort with other computer and cloud-based systems.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with legal procedures and client confidentiality requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, including clients, staff, board members, and external partners.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management abilities.
  • Initiative, resourcefulness, and adaptability in a dynamic nonprofit environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong client-first work ethic.
  • Must be attentive to detail, work well under pressure, and have the ability to manage simultaneous and tight deadlines.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of legal aid and public interest law.
  • Good judgment, a sense of humor, and the ability to maintain a positive attitude.

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish language or other language skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys in legal research, document drafting, and case preparation.
  • Conduct client intake and initial screenings as needed.
  • Prepare and organize case files and maintain records.
  • Provide limited legal information to clients under attorney supervision.
  • Coordinate as appropriate with 603LA staff on assessing client needs and identifying relevant services.
  • Perform administrative duties such as scheduling, correspondence, and data entry.
  • Manage and contact clients to maintain client satisfaction.
  • Assist with grant implementation and reporting requirements as needed.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and maintain understanding of legal issues impacting 603LA clients.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate level of grant compliance knowledge, including LSC regulations and others.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned or required.
