About The Position

Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) is one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the country, taking in more than 20,000 animals each year. We are different from other rescue organizations because we do not turn away any homeless, abandoned, injured or sick animal in need, including cats, dogs, rabbits, small mammals, reptiles, birds, farm animals and wildlife. ACC is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit in NYC with this unique responsibility. ACC is actively seeking a full-time Paralegal & Compliance Analyst to support the General Counsel and perform a variety of legal and administrative tasks that facilitate the legal department. Ideal candidates include paralegals and compliance officers. Law students encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2-3 years of Paralegal and/or Compliance Analyst experience required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe including ability to scan, format, edit and redact .DOC and .PDF files.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Acute attention to detail, superior writing skills.
  • Able to work independently, multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Paralegal certification preferred.
  • Ability to learn quickly and navigate ACC’s animal records database.
  • Strong and confident communicator in person and on the phone.
  • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and assist with legal issues across all areas of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Case management and support: track litigation, manage case calendar and deadlines, file and retrieve court documents in person and electronically using New York State eCourts and Federal (PACER) efiling systems.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents, including contracts, pleadings, correspondence, compile discovery materials, and other related administrative duties.
  • Monitor and document legal compliance with state and local laws, including comprehensive animal shelter standards under New York State law, and New York City Local Law 97, including, but not limited to, conducting on-site shelter visits, consultations with staff and other professionals, analyzing legal documents, preparing detailed reports and providing analysis to ensure organizational compliance.
  • Manage FOIL request responses (e.g. compile responsive records, redact private and exempt information).
  • Conduct legal research relating to relevant laws, regulations, precedents, and other legal questions.
  • Assist with contract review, analysis, drafting, and updating legal agreements.
  • Assist with contract management, i.e. tracking deadlines, deliverables, compliance, and recordkeeping.
  • Assist with registration, renewal, and maintenance of various permits and licenses required for shelter operations and adoption events.
  • Manage responses to civil subpoenas and law enforcement requests for records and information.
  • Coordinate with relevant departments to run custom database reports using specialized software.
  • Attend various hearings, depositions, meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, and other events as needed. Evening court appearances will occasionally be needed.
  • Office management, record keeping and filing, and other administrative duties as directed.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
