Requirements

  • Experience facilitating family law informational sessions and familiarity with relevant laws and procedures.
  • Experience with e-filing and strong understanding of family law and child custody proceedings.
  • Proficiency in conducting legal research and drafting legal documents.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact compassionately with diverse clients.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Empathy, patience, and a commitment to social justice and advocacy for marginalized communities.

Nice To Haves

  • Paralegal certification or equivalent training.
  • Strong understanding of housing law, eviction proceedings, public benefits, and civil rights.
  • Experience working in a legal aid clinic, nonprofit organization, or similar setting focused on homelessness and poverty law.
  • Fluency in languages commonly spoken by homeless populations in the local area.
  • Knowledge of community resources and social service networks available to homeless individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of unhoused college student clients, providing support and guidance throughout their legal proceedings.
  • Assist eligible clients by providing information on resolving family law issues, including eligibility requirements and court procedures.
  • Prepare, review, and file legal documents such as petitions, complaints, motions, and affidavits, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, social workers, and other team members to develop strategies for client representation.
  • Conduct outreach to inform unhoused individuals of their legal rights and available resources, and deliver educational workshops on family law topics.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions and case progress, compiling data for reporting and program evaluation.
