About The Position

This position provides non-medical personnel support to the school nurse for meeting student’s health care needs at school both when the school nurse is present and when she is at another assignment.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to provide physical assistance for and properly lift students in and out of chairs in accordance with safe lifting requirements and the use of adaptive equipment as required.
  • Knowledge of computer applications used to assist with student learning.
  • Ability to strengthen job-related competencies.
  • Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Depending on assignment, may be required to complete behavior modification programs, including safe physical restraining techniques, health services, and/or other training as required.
  • Possession of current First Aid and CPR certification or willingness and ability to achieve certification within designated time frame and maintain for duration of employment.
  • Willingness and ability to complete District-provided HSP training program upon hire and annually, as required

Responsibilities

  • Screen and care for student illness or injury according to standardized First Aid & CPR training and district guidelines.
  • Determine disposition of ill or injured students (consult parents, return to class, go home, arrange transportation, and notify school nurse as needed).
  • Apply the resources provided to non-medical personnel for providing safe and legal health care at school.
  • Evaluate the need for, and secure medical attention by trained personnel (call 911).
  • Consult with school nurse for serious illness or injury especially if unable to contact parent.
  • Maintain a health room log of all students utilizing health room services, including name, date, time in and out, chief complaint, service provided and disposition.
  • Maintain a communication notebook with the supervising school nurse.
  • Share concerns, observations, and decisions and list students needing school nurse services.
  • Monitor student health room patterns and attendance and listen to student’s personal problems as they relate to health.
  • Report/refer student concerns to the appropriate staff person for follow up.
  • Administer medications according to district policy and procedures and after completing medication administration training with the school nurse.
  • Assist school nurse with monitoring of immunization compliance in accordance with state law.
  • Compile data for annual state immunization report.
  • Assist the school nurse with screening programs for vision, hearing, dental.
  • Screen after being trained by the school nurse and record results.
  • Attend to special needs of students such as toileting and hygiene assistance.
  • Follow procedures for emergency evacuations and disaster preparedness as trained and assigned by the school nurse, including documentation.
  • Maintain required student health records by filing health information after review by the school nurse and transcribing screening, immunization and other health data to the health file.
  • Distribute information and letters about illness/injury, head injury, head lice, chicken pox, scabies and immunizations to parents/guardians as directed by the school nurse.
  • Complete incident reports when appropriate, forward to the administrative assistant; obtain follow up information as directed by the school nurse.
  • Follow current procedures for head lice detection and school management as directed by school nurse.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all health care and health information records, reports and conversations.
  • Practice proper infectious disease control measures including universal precautions.
  • Promote proper waste disposal and distribute personal protective equipment (gloves) to staff as needed.
  • Assist in ordering health room supplies and maintaining stock as directed by school nurse.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with school nurse, staff and parents.
  • Participate in meetings and training for the purpose of sharing information, improving the employee skills and knowledge, implementing school initiatives and addressing student needs.
  • Comply with District Policies.
  • Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regularly work hours specified.
  • May be subject to reassignment of job duties depending on program, building and student needs.
  • Such other related job duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
