About The Position

The Paraeducator (Alternative Programs) position at Worcester Public Schools is accountable for providing assistance to the classroom teacher and/or other certified personnel, supporting the instruction of all students, including those with mild to moderate to severe special needs and general education. The role requires patience, perseverance, creativity, and a true desire to prepare all students for successful lives. The paraeducator will facilitate educational access for students with disabilities while adhering to the rules and regulations of the Worcester Public Schools.

Requirements

  • 48 undergraduate college credits, or
  • Meeting or exceeding the State-determined passing score of 464 on the Paraprofessional (ParaPro) Assessment or the WorkKeys Assessment.

Nice To Haves

  • Non-violent crisis intervention trained.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students with special needs.
  • Ability to speak Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, or an African Language, and/or American Sign Language.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the classroom teacher by reviewing, correcting, and reinforcing lessons with individual and small groups of students in all content areas and activities defined in the student's IEP or 504 plan.
  • Assist in preparation and inventory of instructional materials and the setting-up, operating, and maintenance of various classroom learning aids and equipment.
  • Support student physical and personal care needs such as assisting in lavatory routines, toileting, diapering, lifting, feeding, etc.
  • Supervise breakfast and/or lunch periods, assemblies, and clean up work areas.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in clerical work, including recording daily attendance, cataloging, and filing instructional materials.
  • Participate and contribute to weekly, monthly, and long-range planning with the classroom teacher for instructional activities.
  • Maintain open communication with the classroom teacher during the workday.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and provide an educational environment free from harassment and discrimination.
  • Supervise and support students in both structured and unstructured activities throughout the day.
  • Contribute to a warm and open atmosphere for student growth and development.
  • Serve as a guiding source of information for any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher.
  • Implement district and school-wide rules, policies, and procedures, and individual student behavior plans.
  • Adhere to all testing protocols for students with disabilities, including formal and informal testing.
  • Perform duties associated with specialty areas, including those assigned to special projects requiring specialized training.
  • Perform duty work (lunch, recess, line, bus) as required by the Building Principal.
  • Participate in non-violent crisis intervention training (Crisis Prevention Institute - CPI) within the first year of employment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
