About The Position

The Mill Chemist works alongside the production team in order to maximize safety, quality and production. The Mill Chemist will be directly responsible for the management of all chemical systems.

Requirements

  • Four (4) year Bachelor of Science in Pulp and Paper Science, Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Five years of Paper Mill Chemical experience or Chemical Technical Service.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, manuals, regulations, and codes.
  • Ability to write business reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with management, customers, employees, and external regulatory officials.
  • Ability to understand and use simple conversions and algebraic formulas, calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, volume and net present volume.
  • Able to apply concepts of algebra and geometry along with basic math (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing).
  • Ability to troubleshoot chemical systems.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Technically proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Astute knowledge of Chemistry, Papermaking and Papermaking Chemistry.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in paper making, process engineering and plant operations.
  • Superior time management skills including the ability to manage multiple issues concurrently.
  • Excellent employee relations skills including being an active listener.
  • Excellent crisis manager who demonstrates that he/she has a high emotional control.
  • Demonstrated confidence including providing a consistent leadership style with an acceptable level of professional assertiveness.
  • Professional appearance to support his/her role as a managerial representative of the company.
  • Ability to influence others.
  • Excellent decision-making and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Paper Mill experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, designing, and ordering the proper chemical and starch delivery systems.
  • Ensuring the proper installation of the above chemical and starch delivery systems.
  • Commissioning the above systems.
  • Participating in all chemical supplier negotiations, including the final determination of programs and suppliers.
  • Maintaining safety standards in the chemical areas.
  • Maintaining chemical inventories.
  • Maintaining chemical delivery systems.
  • Determining, reporting and optimizing chemical costs.
  • Evaluating trials.
  • Training operators on chemical and general technical concepts.
  • Mentoring and managing two (2) assistant mill chemists.
  • Additional duties as assigned by mill management.
