About The Position

The Harborview Medical Center – Spiritual Care Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Palliative Care Spiritual Care Provider. The mission of the Department of Spiritual Care is to provide high quality, cross-culturally sensitive spiritual care to patients, families and staff of Harborview Medical Center as well as to provide a program of pastoral education to clergy, theological students, and qualified lay persons in the hospital and the larger community which the Medical Center serves. As a member of the Harborview Spiritual Care team, this Spiritual Care Provider will provide direct patient care, with a particular focus on Palliative Care approximately 75% of the time. The position will include some teaching on topics related to spiritual care and palliative care in the context of Clinical Pastoral Education, Nursing Education and Medicine. Harborview Medical Center is the region's only Level I Trauma and verified burn center, a comprehensive healthcare facility owned by King County and operated by UW Medicine, dedicated to providing specialized care for a broad spectrum of patients from throughout the Pacific Northwest, including the most vulnerable residents of King County. Requirements

  • Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) or Master’s degree in theological/pastoral studies from an institution accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (www.chea.org)
  • Two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an accredited CPE center
  • Goal to pursue Full Board Certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or Nashama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)
  • Two to three years’ professional work experience on a team and/or work experience as a palliative care team member
  • Four or more units of CPE from an accredited CPE center
  • Provisional or Full Board Certification with the APC, NACC, or NAJC
  • Experience in a trauma center and/or academic healthcare organization
  • Experience in working effectively and collaboratively as part of a healthcare team
  • Experience providing spiritual care with a diverse community, including use of interpreters
  • Experience in mentoring/teaching Clinical Pastoral Education students
  • Advanced training or certificate in Palliative Care

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a healthcare chaplain, with experience in hospice or palliative care preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct spiritual care to inpatients, responding to referrals for spiritual care consultation, documenting spiritual assessments and contributing to the interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with Spiritual Care colleagues, particularly the on-call spiritual care provider, for allocation of duties and timely communication in spiritual care log to ensure continuity of care.
  • Serve as an essential member of the Palliative Care interdisciplinary team, consulting with colleagues and contributing to their overall plan of care.
  • Respect the trust involved in the educator-student relationship. If a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) student requests post-visit consultation, or begins processing, about a specific issue/concern related to their professional education and/or interpersonal learning, refrain from engaging such conversation and direct the student to their ACPE educator.
  • Serve as on-call spiritual care provider as needed, including on scheduled holidays.
  • Participate in orientation and didactic seminars for Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students in the Harborview Medical Center (HMC) CPE program.
