Job Description Summary The Painter performs professional painting and finishing work to ensure hotel aesthetic quality and physical plant standards are achieved and maintained. The Painter takes care of the interior and exterior surfaces, furniture, and fixtures of the hotel. This position will perform surface preparation, painting, and wallcovering repairs, as well as preventative maintenance, to all areas of the hotel.

Requirements

  • Advanced vocational training in painting and decorating plus two years of experience in professional painting or finishing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of surface preparation, including drywall taping, mudding, and sanding, as well as knowledge of various paint types and wood stains.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write fluent English; other languages beneficial.
  • Reading and writing abilities are required to interpret color charts, mixing instructions, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Mathematical skills, including calculating square footage for paint coverage and estimating supply needs.
  • Problem-solving and reasoning skills, specifically regarding color matching and identifying the correct primers for different surfaces.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required for operating company vehicles or moving equipment.
  • Physical stamina for frequently standing, bending, climbing ladders, and kneeling for extended periods.
  • Safety-conscious approach to using commercial chemicals, solvents, and paint thinners.
  • Capability to lift or pull items weighing up to 75 pounds (e.g., 5-gallon paint buckets and extension ladders).
  • Flexibility to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to minimize guest disruption.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver on the promise of Sonesta Service in all interactions with guests and clients according to the Sonesta G.U.E.S.T. standards.
  • Take responsibility for and inform management of hazardous situations, emergencies, or threats to the security of guests, associates, or hotel assets.
  • Complete work orders specifically related to interior and exterior finishes, including patching drywall, repairing vinyl wallcoverings, caulking, and painting.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on guest rooms and public spaces, ensuring walls, baseboards, and ceilings meet brand aesthetic standards.
  • Refurbish furniture and fixtures such as cabinets, tables, chairs, doors, and counters.
  • Strip, sand, stain, paint, and seal furniture to ensure it remains in "like-new" condition.
  • Maintain the visual integrity of the exterior of the facility, including painting curbs, parking lot striping, directional signage, and exterior trim.
  • Follow procedures that ensure the security of inventory and assets such as paint stock, brushes, sprayers, ladders, and specialized finishing tools.
  • Ensure that the front entrance area, lobby, and guest corridors are free of scuffs, scratches, and peeling paint, maintaining a clean and presentable appearance.
  • Prepare and clean all assigned equipment, ensuring brushes, rollers, and sprayers are operational and stored correctly for the following day’s work.
  • Maintain logs and records of paint codes, color formulas, and schedules of completed work to ensure consistency across the property.
  • Promote teamwork and quality service through daily communication with Housekeeping and Engineering to coordinate room availability for touch-ups.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local laws regarding health and safety, specifically regarding Lead-Based Paint regulations, VOC compliance, and proper disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
