The Painter - Journeyman position at Broward County Public Schools involves performing skilled work in the preparation and application of paint and coatings using various methods such as brush, spray, or roller. The individual will work either independently or as part of a crew, receiving daily work assignments for painting and/or glazing tasks. The painter must be able to read and understand directions, instructions, and specifications for specialty paint products and equipment. Preparation of the job site is crucial for ensuring efficient and safe working conditions. This includes placing protective coverings over floors and furniture, moving obstacles from the work area, setting up scaffolding, and placing ladders. The painter is responsible for preparing surfaces to be painted through various methods such as washing, pressure cleaning, scraping, sanding, caulking, stripping, and patching. After completing the painting tasks, the painter must clean and properly care for the tools and equipment used, including brushes, ladders, rollers, and power equipment. The role also involves applying primer and paint to surfaces, restoring work areas after project completion, and informing supervisors of any needed supplies. The painter will oversee the work of apprentices and laborers as assigned and is expected to participate in training programs to enhance skills and proficiency related to the job. Operating a School Board-owned vehicle safely and maintaining responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle is also part of the job. The painter must complete all projects competently and ensure proper recording of items and materials used. The position requires extensive physical effort, including climbing, lifting weights between 25 to 60 pounds, and working at high altitudes from ladders, lifts, scaffolds, and roofs. Adherence to safety procedures and compliance with federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies, is mandatory.
