About The Position

The Painter II is responsible for providing surface preparation, marine coatings for repairs to ships and boats in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command (MSC), and commercial vessels. This role requires executing and completing work tasks, ensuring quality workmanship, while following the regulatory specifications assigned to each vessel.

Requirements

  • Experience with surface preparation and coating application, including sandblasting, grinding, sanding, use of sprayers, rollers, and brushes; industrial coatings such as epoxy, polyurethane, anti-fouling, and fire-retardant
  • Ability to read and interpret shipyard specifications, blueprints, SDS, and PDS
  • Knowledge of shipyard safety procedures, confined space protocols, and hazardous material handling
  • Ability to work in inclement weather (cold, hot, rain, snow, etc.)
  • Must have basic organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor
  • Must adhere to ISO and OSHA policies established by FMSNA and have high values for safety awareness
  • Technical or trade school, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 2 Years of marine, shipyard, or industrial manufacturing paint experience required, with preferred working knowledge of NAVSEA of 009-32 and SERMC
  • Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) certifications and trained on Abrasive Blaster (C-7) and/or Spray Application (C-12)

Responsibilities

  • Surface Preparation & Coating Application: Prepare ship surfaces through sandblasting, grinding, sanding, and cleaning, and apply primers, marine coatings (epoxy, polyurethane, anti-fouling, fire-retardant) using spray, roller, or brush techniques.
  • Quality & Documentation Inspect your work to meet shipyard specifications, blueprints, SDS/PDS instructions, and coating thickness/coverage requirements. Document work progress, report any issues with materials, surfaces, or equipment. Monitor and record environmental readings as needed, and address quality or compliance concerns promptly.
  • Safety & Environmental Responsibilities: Follow shipyard safety protocols, including PPE, respirators, ventilation, and confined space procedures, and be cross-trained as a Competent Person and Fire Watch to support overall safety. Adhere to Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO), Work Authorization (WAF), Hot Work procedures, and other regulatory or procedural requirements. Handle and dispose of hazardous materials safely and set up containments with negative ventilation when necessary.
  • Teamwork & Work Management Work effectively both independently and as part of a team, providing guidance and mentorship to junior painters. Maintain and set up paint equipment, tools, and work areas in compliance with safety standards. Be certified to operate aerial lifts safely to support various tasks.
  • Flexible to work non-standard hours, and other duties as assigned, including the occasional overtime.
