About The Position

The Tony-award winning UTAH SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL, a professional theater company in residence at Southern Utah University, is accepting applications for Production Staff for the 2026 season. The Utah Shakespeare Festival produces an eight-show repertory season and three Green Shows across four venues in the summer/fall of each year. Position details below. Contract dates vary by position. Most build contracts begin April/May and end June/July. Run contracts Begin in May/June and end September/October. Please check dates in specific job descriptions. Festival Charge Artist: Remote work begins immediately, onsite work begins in April through late July 2026. Charge Artist: Remote work begins immediately, onsite work begins in April through late July 2026. Assistant Charge Scenic Artist: Work begins April 20th through the end of June 2026 Scenic Artist: Work begins April 26th through the end of June 2026. Position is contingent on funding. Due to recent changes inH1Bvisa fees, Southern Utah University is no longer able to sponsor international faculty and staff that require anH1Bvisa and are currently living outside of the United States.

Requirements

  • Intermediate and advanced experience with scenic painting and finishing or related fields.
  • Must be comfortable using ladders, scaffolding, and personnel lifts. Basic knowledge of typical scenery and paint specific tools.
  • Excellent collaborator with previous supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated artistic excellence in the realization of theatrical scenery.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience leading crews of scenic artists.
  • Confident in developing paint and finishing techniques for theatrical scenery.
  • Experience with paint and finishing techniques for theatrical scenery.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the scenic paint department under the guidance of the production manager.
  • Leads hiring and budget oversight for the department.
  • Operates as the charge artist for a portion of productions.
  • Oversees assigned scenic artists, and leads the scenic application of texture, three dimensional sculpting and scenery painting for assigned productions.

  • Assists charge artist with overseeing assigned scenic artists, scenic application of texture, three-dimensional sculpting and scenery painting for assigned productions.
  • Coordinates with Scenic Charge on scheduling, techniques used, purchasing of supplies and equipment.
  • Responsible for painting and finishing of all scenic elements for assigned productions.
