About The Position

The Paint Process Engineer is responsible for independently developing, programming, and optimizing paint application processes for specialty vehicles, including fire trucks and ambulances. This role is the technical expert in robotics programming (Fanuc), machine coding, robot pathing, troubleshooting, paint booth modifications, fluid delivery systems, and PLC integration. The Paint Process Engineer ensures all processes meet PPG paint specifications, support production targets, and deliver high-quality, consistent finishes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering preferred (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Chemical, or Mechatronics degrees preferred).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in engineering/scientific principles.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years' experience in paint process engineering in automotive, specialty vehicles, or heavy equipment.
  • Certified Fanuc robotic programmer with experience in machine coding and troubleshooting required.
  • Proficiency in robot pathing, mapping, and optimization.
  • Experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley or similar).
  • Familiarity with fluid delivery systems and paint booth modifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot both mechanical and programming-related malfunctions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate robotic machine coding and pathing for new models, parts, or product changes.
  • Design and implement paint booth modifications to improve throughput, ergonomics, and safety.
  • Program, code, and optimize Fanuc paint robots, including path development, adjustments, and refinements.
  • Troubleshoot robotic and automation issues (hardware, software, and pathing errors) to minimize downtime.
  • Develop, calibrate, and maintain fluid delivery systems for paint and solvents in line with PPG specifications.
  • Integrate and maintain fire suppression systems within paint booths and equipment areas.
  • Program and troubleshoot PLC systems for automation, communication, and equipment control.
  • Partner with the Paint Supervisor to implement engineering changes, corrective actions, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Lead root cause analysis for paint quality issues, equipment malfunctions, and robot programming failures.
  • Document machine coding, pathing programs, and troubleshooting guides to support repeatability and training.
  • Collaborate with suppliers (including PPG and automation vendors) to implement new technology and best practices.
