About The Position

We welcome applications from highly motivated veterinary students with a strong interest in equine surgery, emergency and critical care, and internal medicine. As a veterinary student summer assistant, you will work under the direct supervision of ICU Technicians, Internal Medicine Technicians, Surgery Technicians, and Field Assistants, intern DVM's and doctors caring for hospitalized patients. Our hospital caseload is varied and consists of a combination of medical and surgical emergency patients and elective cases, as well as mares housed for reproductive management. To be considered, a completed application including cover letter, CV, transcript (unofficial is acceptable) and 2 letters of recommendation must be received by March 21, 2026. Selections will be made by April 1, 2026. Transcripts and 2 letters of recommendation can be emailed to [email protected] This program runs mid-May to mid-August. Bi-weekly salary is $1,220. No onsite housing, offsite arrangements are the responsibility of the student. A bi-weekly off-site housing stipend is available. There are 6 summer internship positions available for the 2026 season. Please indicate your internship position preferences by ranking the four options (1–4) in your cover letter, with 1 being your top choice. (Positions: Horse Show, Field, Internal Medicine/Surgery, ICU) Position Openings: All positions require on-call foal sitting duties in ICU All positions will be required to attend the Monday Morning Doctors Meeting from 7:00am-8:30am each Monday. This meeting includes a lecture on a topic relevant to equine practice as well as case discussions. 1. Horse Show Intern (1 position) Hours vary Summary: Assist various veterinarians with all appointments and emergencies at the Colorado Horse Park during show season. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude as this is a very high client interaction environment. Set up necessary equipment for us in exam area (shockwave, ultrasound, etc.) Clean and properly disinfect exam area and equipment after each use. Upon proper training, ensure that the veterinarian’s truck is fully stocked with medications and equipment needed for that day (x-ray, shockwave, ultrasound, centrifuge etc.) At the end of the day, clean truck, dump garbage, restock supplies, return equipment and properly submit any laboratory samples. 2. Field Intern (1 position) Hours vary Summary: Assist various veterinarians with all appointments and emergencies. Set up necessary equipment for us in exam area (shockwave, ultrasound, etc.) Clean and properly disinfect exam area and equipment after each use. Upon proper training, ensure that the veterinarian’s truck is fully stocked with medications and equipment needed for that day (x-ray, shockwave, ultrasound, centrifuge etc.) At the end of the day, clean trucks, dump garbage, restock supplies, return equipment and properly submit any laboratory samples. Maintain trucks by refueling, washing, vacuuming, and alerting maintenance to any other issues. 3. Hospital-Internal Medicine/Surgery Intern (1 position) Mon-Fri starting at 8am Summary: Assist Boarded Internist and Boarded Surgeon, intern DVM’s, surgery technicians, and internal medicine technicians in caring for hospitalized patients as well as assisting in daily scheduled appointments which include but are not limited to, gastroscope, colic exams, neurological exams, emergencies, muscle biopsies, necropsies, lameness, elective surgeries, arthroscopies, emergency colic surgery, castrations, etc. Assist in disinfecting exam rooms, surgery suites, equipment and tools as well as setting up for scheduled procedures and emergencies. 4. ICU Intern (3 positions) Floating schedule consisting of 40 hours/5 days a week Summary: Assist ICU technicians, primary veterinarians/surgeons and intern DVM’s in caring for all hospitalized patients. Assist with after-hour emergencies. Assist ICU technicians with treatments every 3 hours as well as disinfecting ICU, Isolation and elective barn stalls. Learn tasks and skills from ICU technicians such as medication administration, fluid therapy, and pain management.

  • Assist in disinfecting exam rooms, surgery suites, equipment and tools as well as setting up for scheduled procedures and emergencies.
  • Assist ICU technicians, primary veterinarians/surgeons and intern DVM’s in caring for all hospitalized patients.
  • Assist with after-hour emergencies.
