About The Position

The Part time PACU RN demonstrates critical thinking skills, scientific judgement and leadership in planning for the care of the surgical patient. This role is responsible and accountable for the planning, directing and provision of nursing care to patients in accordance with the NH Nurse Practice Act. The PACU RN should be a strong communicator and possess the ability and physical stamina to provide a high level of care under pressure. Additionally, the PACU RN is responsible for cleaning, decontamination, assembling, and sterilizing all reusable supplies for patient care, as well as the storage of surgical instrumentation and equipment. This position also involves maintaining inventory of necessary equipment and supplies, ordering supplies, and restocking the work area as assigned to ensure the availability of needed supplies.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree required
  • Active NH Registered Nurse License required
  • BCLS and ACLS Certification required
  • 1-3 years of experience required

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all relevant health and safety standards.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of surgical operation procedures, including aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Collaborate with surgeons and other healthcare professionals.
  • Possess a solid understanding of patient health and safety standards.
  • Perform a thorough assessment in accordance with unit standards and/or patient condition, and based on this assessment, plan and implement care appropriately.
  • Provide monitoring/assessment of the patient receiving conscious sedation in accordance with policy.
  • Perform circulating duties in accordance with procedure, demonstrating skill and efficiency, displaying the surgical consciousness required within this highly specialized environment.
  • Monitor operating room equipment, supplies, and medication par levels and provide a needs list to the Director or person responsible for ordering.
  • Demonstrate ability to properly utilize all equipment for specific procedures or seek appropriate resource.
  • Demonstrate self-direction above and beyond daily assignment and actively offer assistance to colleagues both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrate ability to accurately and thoroughly complete operative nursing record documentation, including surgical site confirmation, patient identification verification, and time-out procedures.
  • Demonstrate collegial behavior of respect and consideration with regard to work environment, including restocking rooms, returning equipment/supplies for other surgical procedures, cleaning work areas/station and/or communicating as appropriate.
  • Perform assessment/re-assessment in accordance with unit standards and/or patient condition.
  • Demonstrate ability to intervene when patient condition warrants, per department protocol.
  • Don appropriate equipment in areas of risk, including personal protective equipment (PPE), eye protection when scrubbing, and radiation safety equipment when X-ray is in use.
  • Provide privacy for the patients/family in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Document infection control data as required for quarterly reporting to New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Identify cultural/religious needs, language barriers, developmental and educational needs and modify plan of care as necessary to accommodate these needs.
  • Appropriately handle situations when ethical dilemmas arise.
  • Based on assessment, plan and implement care appropriately including the patient/family/significant other whenever possible.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of procedures including set-up, patient care, specimen collection and handling, point of use testing and documentation, and proper utilization and care of all equipment needed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve performance within the unit and assist with the application of these opportunities (Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement, QAPI).
  • Understand the concepts of customer service and act accordingly and with grace under pressure.
  • Apply aseptic and sterile techniques to medical instruments and equipment before, during, and after surgery.
  • Work as scheduled and be compliant with Attendance and Tardiness Policy.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
