The pay for this position at Scotts/Hawthorne will generally fall between $19.00 - 21.00 per hour and is paid weekly. Scotts/Hawthorne will consider various factors in determining the actual pay including your skills, qualifications, experience, and geographical location. We are looking for a Packaging Intern who will join our Packaging Engineering team in Marysville, OH . This position will be based at The Scotts Miracle-Gro world headquarters in Marysville, a suburb of Columbus, OH. Not familiar with Columbus? Visit columbusregion.com/columbus-2020/ The hourly rate for this position at Scotts will generally fall between $18.80 - $25.40 and is paid weekly. Scotts will consider various factors in determining the actual pay including your skills, qualifications, and experience. The Packaging Engineer Intern will be responsible for tasks in support of optimizing and enhancing our consumer-facing physical packaging through research insights and sustainable design. You will work closely with members of the Research and Development, Supply Chain, and Brand teams to identify opportunities for material reduction and circularity. Additionally you will use the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) Design guide to assess Scotts packaging recyclability. The individual in this role will have exposure to many different facets of our business. This internship offers the opportunity to work with a collaborative team leveraging research tools to evaluate innovative and eco-conscious packaging solutions.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Packaging Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or similar.
  • Graduation date must be on or before December 2027.
  • A commitment to optimizing and enhancing consumer-facing experiences through sustainable package design.
  • Ability to conduct research to uncover pain points in the recycling process to share insights with cross-functional partners.
  • Willingness to ideate and run optimization initiatives with internal and external partners to improve the company's environmental footprint.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on total life-cycle thinking, calculating material mass-balance and shipping efficiencies.

Responsibilities

  • Support packaging research by researching sustainable materials and information to improve the environmental impact of Scotts packaging.
  • Identify points of friction and categorize the recyclability of Scotts' packaging portfolio by auditing it against the APR Design Guide. Based on these findings, propose three specific updates to transition the packaging to "recycle ready" status.
  • Identify high-volume ecommerce SKUs suitable for transition to premium, Shipped-in-Product-Packaging (SIPP) formats. Subsequently, design material-efficient and cost-effective packaging solutions that meet established shipping standards, such as Amazon SIPP and ISTA 6-Amazon.com.
  • Ideate, strategize, and plan initiatives focused on plastic reduction and the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.
  • Share sustainability insights with cross-functional partners to create a smarter, more informed, and more empathetic team.
