About The Position

The Packaging Engineering Intern at Hormel Foods is a pivotal role focused on the design, development, and enhancement of packaging solutions for food products. This internship is essential as packaging plays a significant role in ensuring product safety, extending shelf life, and enhancing consumer appeal. Interns will engage in various assignments that contribute to the overall packaging strategy of Hormel Foods, a global leader in the food industry with a diverse portfolio of brands. The position is based in either Austin, Minnesota, or Northbrook, Illinois, and is designed for students pursuing a degree in Packaging Engineering, with a strong emphasis on practical experience and professional development. Interns will be involved in entering data into the packaging specification database system, evaluating the barrier and abuse characteristics of different packaging materials, and collaborating with suppliers on various packaging systems. They will also coordinate machine trial orders as part of label development and assist Packaging Engineers in conducting various abuse tests, including drop, vibration, and shipping tests. Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to assist in designing creative packaging options for point-of-purchase displays and Club store displays, gaining valuable knowledge in technical report preparation to document test results. A significant aspect of the internship includes completing a research project that provides hands-on experience in true packaging research and development, allowing interns to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting.
