As a Packaging Engineer at Scotts Miracle-Gro, you won’t just be sizing boxes; you’ll be engineering the first physical touchpoint a consumer has with our iconic brands. From heavy-duty flexible films that survive the outdoor elements to cutting-edge, sustainable DTC solutions, you will lead the technical journey from "idea to shelf" in the consumer gardens space.

Requirements

  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) - Required
  • Ability to interpret 2D/3D drawings - Required
  • MS Office / Google Docs Suites - Required
  • Required: B.S. in Packaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: 2–5 years in packaging development, ideally within Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG).

Nice To Haves

  • Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) - Preferred
  • TOPS / Cape Palletization Software - Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional teams in the commercialization of new consumer packaged goods. Be adaptable, flexible, and accommodating to project scope changes. Be highly accountable for your work, do what is needed without being asked, follow through. Be a "doer".
  • Will be responsible for: concept design and refinement, timeline development, testing and optimization, data collection and analysis, development of specifications, pre-commercial scale-up and product launch support.
  • This role will focus on package development in the consumer garden space. It will include designing/testing products that can withstand the elements while being displayed outdoors, but will also have a focus on sustainably designed products targeting the emerging gardener in the DTC space.
  • The Packaging Engineer will successfully collaborate with packaging suppliers, R&D, Quality, Supply Chain and Marketing to ensure business alignment during development and drive technical excellence throughout the product launch.
  • Provide conceptual designs and prototypes of consumer packaged goods; understand and design packaging technology for enhanced user experiences with our products; be able to quickly identify with (and design for) the end user to develop new product ideas and pitch them to the business; determine and create specifications and requirements for new product launches.
  • Utilize problem solving skills, root cause analysis (RCA), quality tools, and data-driven decision-making to prevent/resolve quality issues, supply chain interruptions, and manufacturing issues.
  • Develop and conduct packaging and product testing standards to continuously improve product success rates; have a strong understanding of standard packaging materials: corrugate, rigid packaging, and flexible (film) packaging.
  • Manage project timelines and resources from conception through to implementation, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget constraints.
  • Work directly with manufacturing partners to develop, implement, and troubleshoot manufacturing equipment that enables new product/packaging technologies.
