About the position

At STERIS, we help our Customers create a healthier and safer world by providing innovative healthcare and life science product and service solutions around the globe. The Packaging Engineer responsibilities are at an individual contributor level. Responsibilities include conceptualize, design, develop, revise, coordinate and implement packaging structures for all products under the authority of STERIS. Products packaged on-site include aseptically filled, hazardous, and nonhazardous materials. You will identify and propose advanced packaging technologies to better satisfy internal and external customer needs. You will identify and implement, as approved, packaging development process improvements to increase functional area deliverables. The Packaging Engineer investigates and resolves package problems and complaints. In addition, you will support the interface between packaging and package production equipment to ensure successful packaging implementation and production operations. This is a hybrid role with the requirement of working onsite 3 days/week. Travel required 10% - 20% of time.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design, development, and implementation of effective, creative, cost-appropriate packaging that is consistent with the objectives of STERIS functional groups.
  • Ensure packaging complies with hazardous materials transportation, FDA, EPA, cGMP, and ISO regulations and guidelines.
  • Assist with the identification, support, and implementation of packaging solutions for new product introductions, cost reductions, component and process improvements, regulatory compliance, and problem with complaint resolution.
  • Write and update test protocols, SOPs, and component specifications.
  • Assist with the implementation, coordination, evaluation, and testing of new and revised packaging components.
  • Make package change recommendations and develop component specifications based on test results.
  • Maintain all test records in an orderly, readily retrievable format.
  • Implement, coordinate, and/or supervise applicable UN design qualification testing, periodic re-testing, and, as applicable, production testing.
  • Daily individual and team contact with internal STERIS and external vendor personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Packaging Science, Industrial, or equivalent).
  • Minimum of one (1) year of Packaging Engineering experience, which can include Packaging Engineering internships or co-ops.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a regulated industry, such as medical devices or pharmaceutical.
  • Knowledge of aseptic packaging technology and materials.
