The Opportunity This position works out of our Plymouth, MN location in the Structural Heart division. Structural Heart Business Mission: Why We Exist Our business purpose is to restore health and improve quality of life by designing and providing device and management solutions for treating structural heart disease. Purpose: This is an individual contributor role working under limited supervision. The Packaging Engineer applies subject‑matter expertise to develop, test, and improve packaging systems that ensure the safe distribution, sterile integrity, and presentation of medical device products. The role requires the ability to understand specific technical needs, regulatory requirements, and business priorities to apply engineering knowledge effectively. The engineer will support sustaining activities—responding to packaging‑related requests, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring ongoing compliance—rather than new product development or R&D. This position may involve occasional, sometimes unplanned travel (approximately once per month for 2–3 days).

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering plus 2–3 years of experience in packaging engineering, preferably within the medical device industry.
  • Strong understanding of sterile packaging requirements and sterile barrier integrity.
  • Experience with highly regulated environments and quality systems
  • Good report writing and documentation skills.
  • Strong communication skills; comfortable presenting management.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, procure, install, and test packaging systems and materials for medical device products.
  • Establish packaging systems with optimal effectiveness, performance, and compliance.
  • Develop and specify new and revised packaging components, materials, and configurations.
  • Ensure sterile barrier integrity and that packaging maintains performance throughout product life and aging.
  • Implement packaging‑related process improvements and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and reports in accordance with regulatory and quality system requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of industry regulations (e.g., FDA, ISO standards) related to packaging testing, validation, labeling, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and present packaging recommendations or updates to management.
  • Support sustaining engineering activities (e.g., responding to requests, addressing product or packaging issues, “firefighting” when necessary).
  • Use WindChill or similar document control systems (experience with WindChill is a plus).
