About The Position

The UPMC Department of Neurological Surgery is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our Inpatient Skull Base and Cranial Neurosurgery Service at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. This role provides direct care for a high-acuity neurosurgical patient population, working alongside a nationally recognized team of neurosurgeons and multidisciplinary providers in an academic, fast-paced environment. The APP will be a critical member of the inpatient team, delivering comprehensive perioperative care — from pre-operative evaluation and surgical preparation to post-operative management and coordination of safe transitions of care. This is a hands-on clinical role that requires independent decision-making, procedural expertise, and exceptional communication skills.

Requirements

  • Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) with current state license.
  • Successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program or physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience is preferred.
  • Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
  • National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing.
  • ACNP preferred for CRNP candidates.
  • Act 34, Act 33, and Act 73 Clearances required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage care for patients undergoing skull base, cranial tumor, and complex cranial procedures in a tertiary academic medical center.
  • Lead daily inpatient rounds in collaboration with attending neurosurgeons, residents, and interdisciplinary care teams.
  • Provide high-level neurological assessments, manage acute changes in patient condition, and develop evidence-based care plans.
  • Perform and manage advanced neurosurgical procedures within scope of practice, nonoperative.
  • Document all patient encounters, orders, and procedures accurately and in compliance with hospital and billing requirements.
  • Facilitate discharge planning, including patient and family education, care coordination, and follow-up scheduling.
  • Collaborate with other APPs, residents, nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure seamless patient care delivery.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for junior APPs, residents, and nursing staff.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, protocol development, and clinical research initiatives as needed.
